With Cardi B, Kanye West becomes the masked singer again

Before hitting the stage at the Wireless Festival on Friday, Cardi B released her new track “Hot Shit.” The single, which is from his highly anticipated, yet untitled second album, features Lil Durk and Kanye West and Cardi’s first release of 2022.

Last night, Cardi surprisingly released the music video for the song, which is futuristic, CGI-heavy and sees the singer-rapper sporting a range of cuts, including one reminiscent of the all-white ensembles the band members TLC wore in their own video for “No Scrubs”. That being said, it’s Kanye West, who breaks into the song after two minutes to spit out his own verse, which really shines.

West appears in an intergalactic location next to a motorcycle (which may be one of his next Donda Industrial Design creations) dressed in a high shine latex bomber jacket, scoop neck t-shirt, leather motorcycle pants and a pair of black gloves. On his feet he has a pair of his signature boots, while on his face he wears a futuristic face covering (one of his best, we add) that takes the form of a cat ear helmet with a shiny flip-up visor. In the next scene, West replaces the helmet with a simple burlap face mask, which is loose and again covers his entire face. Turns out even Cardi B can’t pull it off without a mask.

It’s more or less the same as what West has been serving up to us over the past year, and it proves the polymath isn’t about to give up his absurd mask-wearing. This despite the fact that at the Super Bowl earlier this year he found wearing a mask deeply uncomfortable and in fact gave it up, while at the BET Awards last month, where he presented Diddy with the Lifetime Achievement Award winner, he panted like he sprinted to the Downtown LA event from his Calabasas home.

As the internet drags West for his mask-wearing (“Kanye West up there breathing like Darth Vader with that mask on,” one user tweeted during the BET Awards broadcast), we think there’s a universal warming for mask wearing donda rapper. Indeed, the hottest brand in the world right now, Balenciaga, just showed off its couture collection, in which models wore futuristic oval masks with latex catsuits and metallic dresses, while the spring/summer collection 2023 by Comme des Garçons had models sporting animal face coverings. Meanwhile, Loewe and Jonathan Anderson paraded models down the runway with visor-like shields similar to those worn by West in the “Hot Shit” video.

With the masks trending on the catwalks, as well as the game’s most influential rapper rocking them, we reckon it’s only a matter of time before we don our own.
