What is good holiday makeup? Ask for the kit

“I no longer know how to put on makeup to ‘go out’! I focused on makeup that looks good on Zoom, and I focused on my eyes and brows (above the mask), but I don’t know how to do a “full face” anymore, or how. Keep it handsome when it ‘s mask, mask, all night long. How can I feel bright and special while staying modern? “ – Clueless in Oakville

Makeup remains a romantic mystery to me, despite the number of fashion shows I’ve been to and the number of galas I’ve dragged my sore feet to over the years. Left on my own, I can handle the sheer shades I apply with my fingertips. What I do know for sure, however, is that makeup artists are very talented humans and are well worth the investment for special occasions. I also believe in makeup classes.

The best MUAs (Short Internet Form for Makeup Artists) do more than just paint your face. There is something incredibly calming about having makeup built up in layers. The temperament of an MUA involves an ability to instill calmness and confidence, to foster small conversations that slyly add to something strangely deep.

I posed this reader question to Ashley Readings, an artist from the Plutino group who has been working in the field since leaving art school 15 years ago. “I grew up loving makeup, but I didn’t know it could be a job, a career,” she says. “I grew up awkwardly and makeup helped me connect with the world; it was a way to start a conversation.

She went on to work at CBC with Steven and Chris, then moved on to fashion and advertising. The exit from the pandemic, she says, has caused her to take a closer look at the why of certain trends. Here, follow his recommendations, and I assure you this is a list to cut out (or copy and paste) and take with you to the store.

“I watched the red carpets,” she says, “and there’s a sharpness in the look right now. Personally, I think it’s a lot more sophisticated to see a little less makeup all over the place and let an element shine. This, she says, is a response to the fact that our skin breathes so long while we’re at home.

She always uses foundation, just sparingly. But first, hydrate yourself! Her favorite serum is a drugstore find, Vichy Mineral 89. Then it’s time for the primer. Because of the damage done by masks to makeup, primer is a necessity, Readings explains. She loves Charlotte Tilbury Setting Spray, which you use both before applying makeup as a base and after to set it. “It’s a bit tacky and gives the makeup something to hold on to.”

For foundation, she uses either Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish pressed powder “pressed directly into skin with a wet beauty blender to give a shiny look.” Another favorite brand is Canadian, Nudestix, whose Tinted Cover liquid foundations are available in a range of 15 colors.

The traditional wisdom for balancing the face is to choose the face or the lips as the focal point. The two big trends Readings sees are silver for the eyes and bold red lips. There’s a way to make these two looks happen at the same time, she says, if you make the eyes more subtle.

“Silver, I feel like we haven’t seen in a while, so it’s cool. The look had been hot and rose gold for so long. I still can’t seem to pull off a silver eyeshadow, but I love the look of a silver pencil, like the Fenty Flyliner in Moon Dunez shimmer or Chromewrecker matte. I also like the Heavy Metal Urban Decay Glitter Eyeliner in Disco Daydream. If you have a darker complexion, she recommends going for a more tanned complexion. Readings say you can do any combination of upper and lower lashes and waterline, or you can do something she’s loving lately, just a little silver applied like a halo around the channel tear. “It draws attention to the eyes and brightens everything,” she says. “Plus it looks dramatic when you wear a mask.”

As for the red, red lip, Readings says it’s a look that’s going to stick. However, beware of mask transfer. While she enjoys the drama of looks as seen on TikTok with Dior 999 and the return of classic Valentino red, she advises you to go for the Maybelline SuperStay ink pencil in Know No Limits or Hustle in Heels. “It comes with a built-in pencil sharpener,” she says, “so you can apply a clean line around the edge and rest assured that it won’t smudge all over your face when you mask on and take off. “

If you want a natural lip, her go-to is Nars Afterglow Balm, something “I always have in my own makeup bag when I go out,” she says.

The heavily masqueraded look is on the decline, Readings says, and she recommends the freshness over the fancy price tags. “Drugstore mascara is the best mascara because you don’t stick to it that long. You have to throw out your mascara every couple of months and it’s hard to do if you’ve spent a lot on it. I use a lot of L’Oréal Voluminous and love Maybelline Rocker Volume.

So, for the big question, are thin ’90s eyebrows making a comeback beyond model Instagram pages? “I think people work more with what they have these days,” says Readings of the overall more natural look. “No need to overfill anymore if you have something more sparse.”

You see, just talking to a good MUA has given me more control over my panic when I leave the house. Sometimes a self-confidence boost for the holidays is as easy as a new silver eye pencil and a bright red lipstick.
