TN law student who was interrogated for not wearing a mask, assaulted by police; 8 reserved cops

Nine Chennai police officers have been convicted of allegedly assaulting a 22-year-old 5th grade law student, Abdul Rahim, inside the station. Rahim was arrested for slapping a cop who questioned him about not wearing a mask while driving.

Young people arrested for not wearing masks

The development comes from the incident that took place last week, Friday, in Kodungaiyur area. A constable had arrested Rahim at MR Nagar near Kodungaiyur for not wearing a mask while riding his bike. The discussion turned into a heated argument in no time, and Rahim punched the cop for forbidding him to go ahead.

Rahim was arrested for beating a policeman, detained at Kodungaiyur police station and allegedly assaulted by the eight policemen. Images of his injuries have circulated widely on social media.

Lawyers and law students demonstrate

The footage sparked outrage among young people, with several lawyers and law students in the city staging a protest on Thursday January 20 in Pulianthope outside the Deputy Commissioner of Police’s office. They also claimed that the police had filed a false complaint against the youngster.

Protesters denounced police access to Rahim and his treatment at the station and demanded an FIR against them.

Eight police officers arrested

A few hours after the strike, a constable and a police chief were suspended from their duties. Later, an FIR was registered against the police inspector of the all-female police station of MKB Nagar, Nazeema and eight police officers, The new Indian Express reported.

Staff were reportedly sentenced under Sections 323 (penalty for willfully injuring), 324 (willfully causing injury by weapons or dangerous means) and 294(b) (singing, reciting or uttering a song , a ballad or obscene words, in or near any public place) of the IPC.

The law student was later released on bail. Speaking to the media, Rahim explained how the cops continually beat him and kicked him with boots.
