Newton County Schools Lift Mask Mandate for Students – 95.5 WSB

NEWTON COUNTY, Georgia – As of Monday, students and staff in the Newton County school system will no longer be required to wear face masks.

School superintendent Samantha Fuhrey announced on Saturday that the system is lifting its requirements, but still urges students and staff to continue using masks to protect against COVID-19 infections.

Fuhrey said the system’s mandate will always be temporary and based on transmission rates and community conditions. She added that after looking at local data and talking to county doctors, she felt it was time to relax the restrictions.

“As we relax our mask requirement, it remains important that students and staff wash their hands, use hand sanitizer, and monitor their distance as an integral part of our layering prevention strategy,” said Fuhrey.

The school system reported 12 COVID-19 student cases and four staff cases in its latest weekly update. They said 36 students and two staff members were in preventive quarantine.

In contrast, they said at the end of August that they had 154 student and 24 staff cases as well as around 500 students and staff in quarantine.

“As of August 9, our students and staff have been practicing the three W’s – washing their hands, wearing their masks and watching their distances,” said Fuhrey. “And I have no doubts that their actions have played a huge role in decreasing cases of COVID-19 both in our school system and in the Newton County community in general. “

Furhey pointed out that with the rapid approach of the holiday season, if COVID-19 infections start to increase as people start to gather again, the mask’s tenure could return.

“We are approaching the holiday season and people will be gathering among family and friends that they might not normally see,” Furhey said. “The chances of being exposed to COVID-19 will be high. So please understand that if our community’s COVID-19 cases increase again, we will be forced to reinstate the mask’s mandate. “
