Melissa Barrera ditches her skincare routine
Melissa Barrera may have made her big screen debut last year with the musical in heights, but the Mexican actor has been an on-screen force for years, appearing in popular telenovelas before landing a starring role in Starz’s Empty. This year, Barrera has entered uncharted territory by joining the iconic Yell horror movie franchise. Next on his list? A beauty campaign with Clinique as the brand’s very first Latina ambassador.
Like most beauty obsessives, Barrera has been a fan of Clinique since she was little and plays with her mom’s makeup bag. “It’s so surreal. I love working with a brand that the women in my family have used for generations,” Barrera said. Charm. “I have so many childhood memories using Clinique beauty products. It’s a very complete thing, to also be the first Latina to be the face of a brand that has such a presence in Latin America and that never had a Latina ambassador before. It’s an honor and a privilege.”
Makeup played a huge role in Barrera’s upbringing and career, but the actor also appreciates the importance of skincare and started his routine at an early age. “I have beautiful skin because I started skincare when I was very young. It happened by accident. My mother took me and my sisters to the dermatologist because she took my younger sister for a rash on her back, and the dermatologist said, ‘Are you using anything?’ I was 12 and I was like, ‘No, nothing’. I don’t even wash my face .
The dermatologist recommended certain products to Barrera, and the rest is history. “She gave me my first moisturizer, and that’s how it started. It helped me get the skin I have today.
These days, Barrera treats her combination skin and oily T-zone with gentle products that match her busy lifestyle. “Nothing against people who have a 30-step skincare routine,” she says. “I’m very efficient and I make the most of the time I have during the day. Doing it quickly and having a few products that I can use is ideal for me. My biggest concern as I get older – I’m 31 now – is sun damage and applying sunscreen every day, so I can avoid the first signs of skin damage, sun spots, the first wrinkles and all that.
Ahead, Barrera shares the products she uses in her minimalist routine, including the TikTok-approved lip balm she loves and the cleanser she’s been using since she was a teenager. Read on to shop her favorites in another episode of CharmLeave the routine.
I use a cleanser that I’ve been using since I was 16. It’s called Dexeryl, and it’s a dermatological cleanser that’s actually a full body cleanser, but I just use it for my face. I haven’t changed it because it works fine. I use it morning and evening.
I sometimes use a toner. Not all the time, but I will use a toning exfoliator. Clinique Clarifying Lotion, I will use it depending on how my skin feels, because sometimes I feel drier than usual or I feel oilier. I tend to use it when I feel oilier because it really mattifies my skin.
I use Clinique Moisture Surge 100 hours. I have used aloe vera all my life. It was just a home remedy, a little aloe vera leaf, ready for kitchen burns or scrapes. The fact that this product contains aloe vera really helps me with my skin to keep it hydrated. I love the texture. It really helped me while I was shooting in the sun, all day in the forest, swimming in glacial lakes. My skin really felt it. I started using the Moisture Surge, not only as a moisturizer but also as a mask at night, and it really helped.
My eye cream
I use a little retinol, actually. Clinique Smart Night Clinical MD Multi-Dimensional Repair Treatment Retinol Serum. Its texture is very similar to Moisture Surge. And it’s like getting some extra hydration into that super sensitive skin we have under our eyes.
After I put on my face mask, I’ll use a quartz [gua sha] and I will simply massage my face and the product.
my lip balm
I have the Black Honey in my bag all the time. It’s super dew. It’s like a lipstick and a balm. That’s what I carry in my purse. I also use the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.
