Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its mask recommendations on Friday, with officials saying people should “wear the most protective mask possible that fits well and that you will wear consistently.”

The update came following speculation that the public health agency is recommending people wear N95 or KN95 masks. Previously, officials had recommended against the use of the highly protective masks due to a shortage of healthcare workers.

“One of the first things we did when we took office was significantly improve our manufacturing and stocking of all personal protective equipment,” the city’s COVID-19 response coordinator said on Wednesday. White House, Jeff Zients, during a press conference. “Today, N95 masks are widely available and the government has a large stockpile of over 750 million masks for healthcare workers and first responders.”

In updates posted on the CDC’s website Friday, officials said masks labeled as “surgical” N95 respirators should still be reserved for use by healthcare workers.

“Loosely woven fabric products offer the least protection, thinly woven, layered products offer more protection, tight-fitting disposable surgical masks and KN95s offer even more protection, and tight-fitting NIOSH-approved respirators (including the N95s) provide the highest level of protection,” the officials said.

“Whatever product you choose, it should provide a good fit (i.e. it fits tightly to the face with no gaps along the edges or around the nose) and be comfortable enough when ‘It’s worn correctly (covering your nose and mouth) so you can keep it on when you need it.

The updated guidance comes as the United States grapples with an increase in COVID-19 cases fueled by the arrival of the highly transmissible omicron variant. Omicron was first detected in the United States on December 1 and has since become the dominant variant linked to coronavirus infections nationwide, accounting for 98% of recent COVID-19 infections. According to the CDC.

Since the start of the pandemic, authorities have reported 64.6 million cases of COVID-19 nationwide, resulting in nearly 849,000 deaths, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Globally, 322.4 million cases have been reported, resulting in 5.5 million deaths, according to the university.

AMESBURY – A temporary indoor public mask mandate could be on the horizon after city council voted 7-2 on Tuesday night to ask the Board of Health to take up the case.

General Councilor Steve Stanganelli sponsored a resolution that urges the board to call an emergency session, if necessary, to adopt an indoor mask mandate for all public places in the city until February 1.

The city has implemented a mask mandate for municipal buildings only. But Stanganelli cited the increase in COVID-19 cases in Amesbury and pointed to neighboring Newburyport, which he says has fewer cases and a mask warrant for all public buildings.

“In Newburyport, where they ordered an indoor mask warrant for private companies, their positivity rate was lower,” Stanganelli said. “Given the transmissibility of this variant, I am worried, other parents are concerned. I think the least we can do is provide this as a temporary public health measure. “

Stanganelli was joined by councilors Adrienne Lennon, Nicholas Wheeler, Scott Mandeville, Michael Hogg, Roger Deschenes and Jonathan Hickok to vote for the resolution on Tuesday night with councilors Anthony Rinaldi and Peter Frey opposing.

Fire Chief and Public Health Director Ken Berkenbush informed the council that the city tends to increase COVID-19 positivity numbers due to the omicron variant. But Berkenbush recounted some information he recently received from colleagues attending the efforts in Chicago and Detroit.

Berkenbush said the omicron variant is not as potent or as deadly as previous variants and will typically stay in a person’s nose and upper respiratory tract.

“It doesn’t appear to adhere to the lungs and appears to be just as deadly as the rest,” Berkenbush said. “So even though the numbers go up with a relatively good clip, I’m not necessarily too concerned about the overall effect. It’s kind of like a bad cold season right now.

Berkenbush said firefighters receive about two COVID-19 calls per day.

“A lot of these people are doing really well,” Berkenbush said. “They get a positive test and think they should go to the hospital and they really don’t.”

Deputy Chairman of the Board of Health Matthew Steinel told council his council could vote on the issue as early as January 20.

Lennon reminded council and the public that a resolution is non-binding and that the institution of a mask mandate would be the responsibility of the Board of Health.

“We have no authority whatsoever to request the institution of a mask warrant or the non-institution of a mask warrant,” Lennon said. “The discussion we are having here tonight is whether or not we are going to ask another body to discuss the matter and make a decision.”

Students and teachers will be required to wear masks at school for “the foreseeable future,” Gov. Phil Murphy said on Monday, even as lawmakers planned to let his the authority to impose this mandate expires.

Murphy did not say exactly how he plans to impose the mandate, but his announcement prompted Senate Speaker Stephen Sweeney to withdraw a resolution this would have given the governor back some of his powers to tighten COVID restrictions, primarily regarding hospitals and administrative matters, but not the ability to enforce a statewide mask warrant.

Murphy may have other options that would allow him to restore his masking authority if the legislature allows his powers to expire on January 11, such as declaring another public health emergency.

Sweeney, who presided over his last voting session on Monday after losing re-election, said Murphy’s announcement was “disrespectful” to lawmakers and “aggravating as hell” that he did not. not been consulted.

The story continues under the gallery

And after nearly two years of COVID-19 restrictions, Sweeney added, “we’ve got to find a way to live with this.”

Murphy took the opposite view on Monday afternoon, when he announced highest number of hospitalizations since the first wave of April 2020.

“Unmistakably, the mask’s mandate in schools will continue for the foreseeable future,” he said during his regular COVID-19 briefing in Trenton. “We cannot responsibly, in the face of this tsunami, shift gears on this point.”

Delhi is subject to a weekend curfew that started at 10 p.m. on Friday and continues until 5 a.m. (File)

New Delhi:

There will be no Covid lockdown in Delhi if people follow protocol – wear face masks in public and maintain social distancing – Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Sunday as the nation’s capital scrambles to contain a startling increase in new cases over the past few days.

“No need to panic… be responsible. We don’t want to impose a lockdown just yet… we want to keep the borders as small as possible, so that the common man isn’t affected. a DDMA (Delhi Disaster Management Agency) and we will review the situation, ”he said.

Today’s post was a repeat of what Mr Kejriwal said last week when he said Covid cases were increasing rapidly in the city but there was no need to panic.

The chief minister also urged people to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Mr Kejriwal also announced that he had recovered after a Covid infection broke out during his campaign for next month’s election in Uttarakhand. “I’m back to your ward after recovering from Corona,” he said, adding that he self-isolated at home after having a two-day fever.

Mr Kejriwal’s pleas come as Delhi is expected to report around 22,000 cases of Covid today.

The city reported 20,181 yesterday, a 16% increase. New daily cases are also approaching the one-day high of 26,169 set on April 23, at the height of the second wave.

The new wave of infections is fueled in part by the Omicron variant, which is more infectious than the Delta strain. This leads to milder symptoms, but doctors have warned against underestimating.

Delhi has so far reported 513 Omicron Covid cases (second only to Maharashtra).

Experts say the milder symptoms produced may be offset by the large number of cases that will be reported, which could put undue strain on healthcare infrastructure.

In addition, more than 300 doctors and medical professionals tested positive in Delhi during this wave.

Health Minister Satyendar Jain said on Saturday that the Delhi government has decided to increase the number of available hospital beds (normal and intensive care) in anticipation of a greater number of cases.

5,650 normal beds and 2,075 intensive care beds in 14 hospitals, as well as 2,800 in Covid centers, would be added to those already available, he said, noting that around 13,300 beds were available in total. .

“Delhi government is ready to face the most serious situation. Delhi health system is very ready to prevent this wave and provide prompt treatment to all people in the state”, a- he declared.

As part of its efforts to contain the third wave in the city, the Delhi government has ordered a weekend curfew that began at 10 p.m. Friday and will remain in effect until 5 a.m. tomorrow.

During this period, only people involved in essential services and those facing an emergency can leave the house. Travelers must produce government-issued e-passes or have valid ID cards.

India reported nearly 1.6 lakh of new cases this morning in the past 24 hours.

ORLANDO, Florida – Omicron variant of COVID-19 is making people rethink how they protect themselves.

Some media reports tell people to ditch their sheet masks and go straight for N95 respirators.

[TRENDING: Study: Researchers predict end of omicron wave is near | Florida Oath Keeper speaks from jail | Become a News 6 Insider (it’s free!)]

While the N95 is a gold standard that will offer the wearer more protection against COVID-19 than other face covers, some researchers say the mask that fits well and is comfortable for each individual to wear is best. – and that might not be the N95 for you.

A d

“There are several issues around the masks,” said Prof. Steven Luby of Stanford University, one of the main authors of a study on the effectiveness of masks. “One is their filtering quality and the other is their fit. So if they don’t fit very well, the quality of the filtering doesn’t matter.

Types of masks

U.S. health officials have also long told us that when a person wears a mask, they are protecting others rather than themselves, as the mask minimizes the particles expelled when that person coughs or sneezes.

The N95 respirator is highly regarded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health for its performance in workplaces where workers are exposed to small particles or viruses. The N95 actually offers some protection to the wearer.

A d

At the start of the pandemic, concerns over PPE shortages led health officials to tell the public not to go out and buy face masks, and then use cloth masks or disposable surgical masks at the start of the pandemic. as they became more available, in order to keep stocks for healthcare workers.

Now they are no longer available, but they are not for everyone.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says masks should not be worn:

  • If you have certain types of facial hair

  • If it is difficult to breathe

  • If it is wet or dirty

  • With other masks

Luby said there was not a lot of data at the moment on reusing an N95 mask, but points out that some healthcare professionals at the start of the pandemic were often only able to use one mask per day. due to supply issues, although guidelines required them to change masks with each new patient examined.

“You have a mask for the day and you wear it all day,” Luby said. “And you know, when you look at the amount of transmission that has taken place using this approach, very little. I mean, health workers who had good masks and practiced good hygiene had very low transmission, which tells me that we probably don’t need to change all the time. “

A d

NIOSH says it does not recommend that medical workers reuse N95s unless their facility implements crisis strategies. For the general public, NIOSH says people should follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

“N95 respirators cannot be washed. They should be discarded when they are dirty, damaged or difficult to breathe, ”a spokesperson for the agency said.

There is another type of mask called KN95 mask. Although it is similar to the N95, it is not the same.

“So the KN95 is made in China and aspires to have the same filtration efficiency, but they haven’t been certified by the US NIOSH,” Luby said. “And CDC has a site where they have tested several different brands, and some of them have met this standard, and some have not and so, so it is less clear when you buy them whether you have one that meets this high standard or not. And I think that’s something very difficult for consumers.

A d

NIOSH said KN95 masks are rated by an international standard and manufacturers can ask NIOSH to review them, but then they would be classified as N95 masks, not KN95.

The CDC also warns on its website that approximately 60% of KN95 masks sold in the United States are counterfeit and unapproved.

Disposable masks for medical (or surgical) procedures and fabric masks are more widely known and accessible to the general public. While not as effective as N95 or similar masks, they do provide protection when used in a community setting.

Luby, professor of infectious diseases, and his team conducted a Large-scale clinical trial of over 300,000 people in Bangladesh. Some of the subjects used fabric masks while the rest used surgical masks. His team found that people who wore surgical masks performed significantly better than people who wore cloth masks, even when cloth masks had multiple layers – 30% to 40% for cloth masks.

A d

“Unlike the 90% and more we would get from medical grade masks,” Luby said.

Even more surprisingly, Luby said surgical masks always performed better than cloth masks after being washed.

“What we found in Bangladesh was that we could wash them with detergent, wash them and dry them and people could wear them. Wear them for up to a month during the trial, ”Luby said. “And when you do that, when you get them wet, you lose some of the filtration efficiency, because some of it is based on the load of the spun polyester. But they still outperform even when washed, they still outperform cloth masks. “

Luby said the masks were hand washed with a detergent similar to laundry detergent.

However, Luby said the cloth masks still interrupt the symptoms of COVID-19.

“I’m not saying cloth masks are worthless, but rather we’ve received a strong signal on surgical masks,” Luby said.

A d

He also points out that fabric masks tend to fit some people better and, again, that fit can make a difference.

How to get a good fit on your mask

NIOSH researchers published a study in the American Journal of Infection Control in December on the effectiveness of masks and the prevention of the spread of infection.

A surgical mask with an added splint around the mask to improve the fit. (NIOSH)

The study focused on two areas that Luby said are important: filtration and fit.

The study concluded that a three-ply fabric mask over a medical mask (known as double masking) or the attachment of a medical mask provided the best protection against particles from respiratory systems, aside from N95. .

This again comes down to the importance of a properly fitted mask to prevent these particles from passing through.

The study offered several options to improve the fit of the surgical mask, including adding a splint to the mask, using flip flops for earrings, or tying the earrings. The study said crossing the earrings or putting a support under the mask did not increase performance.

A d

A side view of a mask with the earrings tied to improve the fit on a mannequin. (NIOSH)

“There is always a kind of open question of how much is wearing a mask – that people who have COVID now wear a mask and therefore we receive less transmission of COVID, compared to how much by wearing a mask I am protecting myself,” Luby said. “And for example, the N95 is really designed to protect caregivers. Yes, but if we put surgical masks on patients, we also know that for tuberculosis and other airborne illnesses it protects both healthcare workers and the community. So in a sense, when we put that in, are we trying to optimally reduce shedding, or are we trying to protect ourselves? And I suspect it’s a bit of both. And for the best fit, the more you force both inhale and exhale through the mask. And so that there are many more opportunities to stop particles. “

What about the filters?

“So the more you can put between the air and between the outside and the inside, the better. And so, multi-layer masks tend to outperform single-layer masks, including those with inserts, ”Luby said.

A d

If you want to stick with a cloth mask and don’t want to double the mask, the more layers the better. Some mask designs and designer retailers like Very Bradley have sold two-layer fabric masks that come with a PM.2 filter that you can insert between layers.

There isn’t enough actual data on the filters in the masks to determine if they are really that effective.

A study published last summer in the American Chemical Company Nano found using polypropylene filters could potentially provide protection, but more research is needed.

Polypropylene is the same material used to make N95 masks, and polypropylene filters are available for purchase.

The number of studies of masks as effective in warding off the disease continues to grow. the The EPA also has an efficacy study, and there is other studies published in the last six months. the CDC has the latest mask guidelines and choosing the right one on its website.

A d

While not all face coverings are created equal, Luby says what matters is that people wear a mask, more than the guy.

“I’d much rather they put on a cloth mask than put on a surgical mask or an N95 and say ‘it’s so uncomfortable’. Forget it,” and rip it off and go without a mask, “Luby said. “So I think people would protect themselves and their communities if they wore a mask. The better the mask, the more protected they are, the more their community is protected.”

School District 2 may soon remove the mask mandate for students and teachers on their campuses. But our local officials say it may be too early to make that decision.

As it is, students are expected to enter their school with a face mask on, but in less than two weeks that could change. Some parents have fought masks from the start, but health experts say the masks have helped keep schools open.

Since the start of the school year, SD2 students have been obliged to wear a mask at school. But Superintendent Upham may soon change that. At this point, he says it’s still too early to tell and is monitoring the number of cases to see if they increase over the next few weeks. RiverStone Health’s John Felton said on Wednesday that covid cases were on the rise again. On December 13, there were no cases of omicron in Montana, but just two weeks later, on the 27th, 35% of covid cases across the state were Omicron.

Some parents of SD2 students argue that the masks have done nothing to stop the covid – and after the protests this summer, they say every parent should have the right to choose whether their student wears a mask.

“There have been almost 1,000 cases in Billings Public Schools, with the masks, and we see that the schools that are masks optional in our community, they are open. They are in person, and they do not have the barriers. that come with wearing a mask, ”said SD2 Parent, Luke Hudson

Hudson helped start a Facebook group called “Make masking optional in Billings Public Schools,” and he believes the school district shouldn’t have the power to make masks mandatory.

Superintendent Upham is expected to make his final decision on the mask’s tenure by the start of the new semester – which is January 17.

ORLANDO, Florida – With schools restarting and an omicron wave of COVID-19 growing, districts are urging students, parents and staff to prepare.

Orange County School Board President Teresa Jacobs said the district would reinstate its adult mask mandate from Tuesday.

Regarding students, Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins said, “There is no requirement for students, but face masks can add another layer of protection.”

Orange County, like all school districts in Florida, cannot impose masks in schools after Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida legislature banned it last year.

“The legislation was drafted to hold parents accountable and protect students from forced masking policies,” DeSantis press secretary Christina Pushaw told News 6. “The law also protects employees from vaccination warrants, but it does not mention the employer’s mask mandates. However, Governor DeSantis has publicly criticized all mask mandates, and in particular employers requiring employees to wear masks. “

But of course they can offer the suggestion, as do the Osceola and Seminole school districts.

A d

The Osceola County School District spent the holiday weekend posting to Facebook, urging students to take a COVID test if they have traveled or been exposed to the virus and to stay home if they are. sick.

A representative from the Osceola County School District said Monday their public schools had 12,660 excused absences, more than double the number of absences they had on a given day in December.

In Lake County, all schools now have test kits so staff and students, with parents’ permission, can take a test on site if they feel ill.

Seminole County Schools Superintendent Serita Beamon sent a letter to staff on Monday letting them know they could pick up home test kits Monday from drive-thru sites at two schools and that “SCPS s ‘is committed to maintaining an opportunity for students to engage in traditional activities. learning experiences with their teachers and peers.

In a statement, a representative from the school said they will also extend COVID-19 testing to the Oviedo campus in Seminole state and the Ministry of Health.

A d

Seminole, nor any other district, has a choice of having students “engage in traditional learning experiences.” A spokesperson for Orange County Schools said the state does not approve of schools offering an alternate brick-and-mortar replacement option for this school year.

Seminole has said he will not be reactivating his virtual school at this time.

Orange County currently offers a virtual school.

DeSantis said at a press conference in South Florida on Monday morning that schools would not be closing.

“Our schools will be open in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said. “They (the children) must be in school, the parents must be assured that they will be able to send their children to school.”

ALBANY-Gouv. Kathy Hochul on Friday outlined the state’s five-point plan for the expected winter outbreak of COVID-19 cases.

The updated plan 2.0 was developed because the virus is moving so rapidly, Hochul said. The number of New Yorkers with COVID-19 has increased dramatically over the past month.

“We have to be very smart; we have to use what we have learned over the past two years to deal with this pandemic,” Hochul said. “We have to be focused, specific and focused. We have done the right things, but 2.0 is just improvements over what we have done, and again, to sound the alarm that the numbers continue to rise “They don’t need to. We can control it. It’s within our grasp.”

The Winter Surge Plan 2.0 has five components: keeping students in schools; continue to wear masks and perform tests; prevent serious illness and death; continue to increase vaccines and boosters for adults and children; and continue to work collaboratively with local leaders.

The sharp increase in cases this winter after the holidays has been expected for months, Hochul said. The growing number of COVID-19 cases is seen not only in New York City, but nationally and globally. In addition, New York state is beating a record number of new cases every day, she added.

COVID-19 test kits are coming to schools to help keep students in class, Hochul said.

“We want to make sure we have enough supplies for one of their classmates to be positive,” Hochul said. “Anyone can take a test kit home in their backpack and come back the next day if they test negative, and get tested again in a few days. This is how we believe, listening to the experts, to be the safest way to keep children in school. “

Students at New York State Universities and New York City Universities will need to be vaccinated when eligible, and faculty will need to be vaccinated, Hochul said. Colleges will continue to be required to make a random selection.

Hochul extended the states masking and vaccination protocol for state-owned enterprises for an additional two weeks until February 1.

The state has distributed more than 5 million KN-95 masks to counties with more to come, Hochul said. She suggested that people who want to wear cloth masks instead wear the more effective masks, such as the KN-95, and wear a cloth face mask over them for added safety.

“Keep your mask fun, but make sure you wear it over a mask that gives you more protection,” Hochul said.

The state called on the federal government to provide more resources to the state, including more drugs, and called on the federal government to give the state the right to protect occupants of nursing homes, said Hochul.

“Here’s the problem,” Hochul said. “We do not have the capacity to require visitors to nursing homes to be vaccinated. We have always known that this is a vulnerable population. We know that many people are vaccinated in nursing homes. nursing home and made sure booster shots were available for nursing homes back in November. “

The state has asked the federal government to revise its regulations that do not allow the state to impose regulations on visitors to nursing homes, Hochul said.

“Visit your loved one,” Hochul said. “But also, don’t be the reason a loved one doesn’t survive because you brought the virus into the nursing home of him and his neighbors. Please be smart about it. that we can’t demand it right now, we’ve asked the federal government to give us the power. In the meantime, do it because it’s the right thing to do.

The vaccine and booster shots are the best ways to protect yourself from serious illness, said acting state health department commissioner Dr Mary Bassett. The FDA has granted emergency approval for two oral antiviral drugs, she said last week.

“It’s a huge step forward,” Bassett said. “And that will give us a way to keep people at risk of hospitalization and infected out of hospitals. But we need much larger quantities than what we have received. The supply is being distributed by the federal government and we have got our allocation of 3,180 doses, which are distributed statewide. ”

The drug is distributed based on the number of COVID-19 cases, as well as the county’s population, Bassett said.

The state Department of Health predicts the supply will increase, Bassett said.

The supply has been low due to production issues, she added, and there is not much in the national supply of the drugs.

The state is targeting vaccines and boosters to increase the number of adults and children vaccinated, Hochul said. Increasing the number of New Yorkers vaccinated is especially important for children, as childhood immunization rates tend to increase, but they remain low overall, she added.

Hochul encouraged parents to get their children immunized.

“This is the final message – 2022 is the year we conquered this pandemic,” Hochul said.

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Las Vegas is not canceling or scaling back plans for large New Years gatherings over concerns over the rapid spread of the omicron variant of COVID-19, regional public safety and leaders said on Wednesday. elected.

More than 300,000 visitors are expected to come to town for events including a New Year’s Eve fireworks display on the Las Vegas Strip that was canceled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Thousands of ticket holders are also expected for an outdoor musical event on multiple stages under a canopy light show at a downtown pedestrian mall called the Fremont Street Experience.

“If you are sick, stay home. If you’re inside, wear a mask, ”said Michael Naft, a Clark County commissioner who stood alongside Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and officials from the police, fire department and centers. communication to describe the restrictions, including the ban on glass and metal containers, coolers, strollers, backpacks, handbags and luggage.

“We encourage everyone to look out for each other, take personal responsibility and take proactive steps to limit the spread of COVID-19,” Naft said.

The safety speech came on a day when a wave of coronavirus caused largely by the highly contagious variant of omicron pushed new cases of COVID-19 in the United States to the highest level on record, to more than 265,000 per day on average. The previous mark was 250,000 cases per day last January, according to data kept by Johns Hopkins University.

Paris, London, Berlin and New York are among the cities that have scaled back or canceled New Year’s celebrations, and airlines have canceled thousands of flights due to a staff shortage blamed on the virus.

Chicago officials said this week that their fireworks display was still on, despite Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s warning at a press conference that “Omicron and Delta are coming to your party.”

In Las Vegas, regional health officials on Wednesday reported 2,201 new cases of the coronavirus – the largest increase in one day since January 11 – and 15 new deaths. New cases and deaths tend to increase, and the number of people hospitalized in Clark County with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 has also jumped.

The county’s 14-day test positivity rate, representing a percentage of people tested for COVID-19 and found positive, reached 10.1%, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. The World Health Organization’s target is 5% or less to relax mitigation measures.

The Southern Nevada Health District reported that 68.2% of residents in the Las Vegas area had received at least one injection of the COVID-19 vaccine, and 55.8% were fully immunized.

Goodman, a vocal critic of Nevada’s mask warrants and crowd size restrictions in the first months after the March 2020 business closures were enacted, wore a mask on Wednesday but removed it to remind media that the biggest events in Las Vegas will be held outdoors.

“We are saying that people (can) feel comfortable not wearing a mask,” the mayor said. “But individually, if you have a problem or are concerned, wear your mask. It’s a matter of respect.

Last year, even though the fireworks were canceled, thousands of revelers still gathered on casino-lined Las Vegas Boulevard to ring in 2021.

This year, the National Weather Service is forecasting a cold Friday night with near-freezing temperatures on the Strip under generally clear skies and winds that shouldn’t prevent the fireworks.

The eight-minute choreographed fireworks display will be filmed atop eight resort properties framed by the STRAT Tower and the MGM Grand Hotel, accompanied by a soundtrack broadcast on two FM radio stations in Las Vegas.

Clark County Deputy Sheriff Christopher Darcy cited lessons learned about police, fire, ambulance and communications cooperation since a sniper in October 2017 rained gunfire for 10 minutes from a high-rise hotel into a concert crowd of the Las Vegas Strip. Fifty-eight people died that night and hundreds were injured. At least two more deaths were later attributed to the mass shooting, which remains the deadliest in modern U.S. history.

Darcy said about 1,200 police officers will be assigned to the Las Vegas Boulevard neighborhood, where roads will be closed and hotels will also have thousands of security guards. Several hundred officers will be assigned to the Fremont Street neighborhood.

A curfew requires anyone under the age of 18 in both areas to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

“We encourage people to take the appropriate precautions – whether it’s vaccinations or wearing face coverings – and to do whatever you can to protect yourself,” the police official said.

He added that partygoers should arrange transportation that does not involve driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Wear warm clothes and comfortable shoes,” Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Warren Whitney said. “Stay hydrated and be prepared to walk a lot. “

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority noted in a statement that the fireworks were visible “on and off the Strip and around the Las Vegas Valley.”

“We encourage revelers to take appropriate health and safety precautions before arriving and while they are in Las Vegas, follow the inner mask mandate, and seek medical attention if they are unwell. “, says the press release.
