Cameron Diaz Recalls Bizarre Modeling Job in Paris Early in Her Career

The actress, who comes out of retirement this year, recalled a dodgy modeling job she took that turned out to be much more sinister than expected.

Hollywood icon Cameron Diaz inadvertently found herself in a very sketchy position as a model in the early 90s.

The reclusive star, who recently announced her return to acting, was chatting with Hillary Kerr about her second life podcast, when she recounted her year spent in Paris to pursue a career in the world of fashion.

She explained that in the United States she made money as a catalog model, but in Paris she struggled to find success.

“I haven’t worked a day. I stayed there for a full year and didn’t work a day. I couldn’t book a job to save my life.

“I had a job, but I really think I was like a mule hauling drugs to Morocco – I swear to God.”

Describing the unusual modeling assignment, she said she was given a locked suitcase to carry from Paris to Morocco “which had my ‘costumes’ in it… in quotes”.

“When I got [to the airport], the guy was like whose suitcase is this, can someone open it? And I was like… All the calculations in my head were running back.

Explaining that this was before strict airport security measures became commonplace across the world, Diaz recalled thinking, “What’s in that suitcase? I’m like this girl with blue eyes and blond hair in Morocco, it’s the 90s, I’m wearing ripped jeans and platform boots and my hair is down. I’m like… it’s really dangerous.

She went on to say that she just explained that she didn’t and had no idea who it was, and presumably moved on.

After the Morocco debacle, Diaz booked her first-ever acting gig as Tina Carlyle in The mask facing Jim Carrey, although he had never played before.

The 49-year-old American actress, who hasn’t starred in any projects since 2014, is making a long-awaited return to the big screen in the upcoming film, Back to actionalongside Jamie Foxx.

Foxx, 54, shared the announcement on Twitter along with an audio clip of himself, Diaz and NFL legend Tom Brady talking about the charlie’s angels the star’s “non-retirement” over the phone.

In the video, Brady, who announced his retirement from football earlier this year before reversing his decision a few weeks later, can be heard giving Diaz advice on re-emerging in the spotlight.

“I was talking to Jamie, and he said you need some advice on not retiring. And I’m doing relatively well not retiring,” Brady can be heard saying.

Diaz said she was “anxious” but “excited.”

Little is known about the upcoming film, but Canadian comedy actor Seth Rogen is set to direct, having also co-written the screenplay alongside Brendan O’Brien. Diaz’s last cinematic outing was also with Foxx, in the 2014 remake of Anne.
